How to create a Neon Effect Material in Unreal Engine

In this double vertical lesson, we'll explore the creation, optimization, and advanced management of emissive materials in Unreal Engine 5, using a realistic neon light as a case study.

We'll start from the basics of the Material Editor, assembling the logical and mathematical nodes to generate a procedural and customizable flickering effect (Flikering), ideal for bringing cyberpunk signs or faulty light bulbs to life.
In the second part of the lesson, we'll take a technical leap: we'll discover how to configure Lumen to enhance emissive light, we'll apply a mathematical trick to make the neon intensity independent of the camera exposure, and we'll clean up the workflow by packaging the logic into reusable Material Functions .

BY FOLLOWING THIS COURSE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

  • Mastering Emissive Color: Understand how to manage light produced directly by materials in UE5.

  • Creating Procedural Animations: Exploit math nodes and temporal parameters to create flickering effects without the use of keyframes.

  • Controlling Lumen: Configure real-time global illumination to make your scene react to emissive lights realistically.

  • Mastering Exposure: Risolvere il problema comune dei materiali che si "spengono" o si "bruciano" a causa dell'auto-esposizione della telecamera.

  • Working as a Professional Tech Artist: Use the Material Functions to keep your Material Graph clean, optimized, and modular.

ARE THERE ANY REQUIREMENTS OR PREREQUISITES FOR THE COURSE?

  • Software: Unreal Engine 5 (any recent version) installed.

  • Skills: A basic understanding of the Unreal Engine interface. You don't need to be an expert in the Material Editor: each node will be explained step by step, making the lesson accessible even to those starting from scratch.

  • Hardware: A PC capable of smoothly running Unreal Engine 5 with Lumen enabled.

TO WHOM THIS COURSE IS ADDRESSED:

  • Unreal Engine beginners who want to start understanding material logic without feeling overwhelmed.

  • 3D Environment Artists and Level Designers who want to drastically improve the look and feel of their scenes (cyberpunk, horror, sci-fi) using neon lights and dynamic signs.

  • Aspiring Tech Artists curious to understand how to optimize material graphs and solve exposure and light management issues with Lumen.

THE PROGRAM

  • Introduction to emissive materials and channel activation Emissive Color.

  • Mathematical and temporal node logic to generate the flickering effect .

  • Creating parameters to control flickering speed and intensity.

  • Configuration and behavior of emissive materials under the Lumen algorithm.

  • Implementazione del "Trucco dell'Esposizione": rendere la luminosità indipendente dalla camera.

  • Code cleanup: introduction to Material Functions and material packaging for reuse in other projects.
