In nature, transitions do not occur through uniform gradients: each fiber maintains its own identity, generating an organic mixture in the boundaries between different patterns.

A probabilistic approach to color distribution
In Unreal Engine AVASCOT introduces a system that uses a single grayscale texture to drive color distribution probabilistically.
The principle is simple but powerful:
Lighter values increase the probability that a new color variation will be assigned to individual fibers.
Darker values keep the fibers belonging to the base area.
The result is not a linear blend, but a stochastic distribution of fibers that credibly simulates the natural behavior of fur or hair.
This allows for visually richer and less artificial transitions than standard blending methods.
Probability Mask vs. Traditional Blending
Unlike a classic lerp between two colors, the probabilistic system does not generate a continuous gradient, but a controlled co-presence of fibers belonging to two different areas.
In production, this means greater realism and better integration between complex patterns, such as spots, tonal variations, or areas of secondary color.
A control table also allows you to precisely evaluate how each gray value affects the assignment probability, offering an extremely advanced level of art direction.
