Unreal Engine 5.6: Key Features

Unreal Engine 5.6 is now available for download, bringing significant improvements that allow developers to build realistic and seamless open worlds, with optimized 60 FPS performance on next-generation hardware.
Additionally, the animation system has been enhanced to work directly within the editor, reducing reliance on external software.

POWERFUL, HIGH-FIDELITY 60 FPS OPEN WORLDS

This release is designed to deliver visually rich and consistently smooth experiences, even on demanding hardware.
Lumen has been optimized to use ray tracing more efficiently, reducing CPU load and improving the handling of complex scenes.
Static asset loading and streaming have also been improved, offering faster and more reliable performance and greater overall stability.


ACCELERATED ANIMATION AUTHORING

In-editor animation has been significantly enhanced: the new Motion Trails enable more visual and precise editing, while updated tween tools offer smoother control between keyframes.
Sequencer has been improved for more intuitive timeline management, including more efficient real-time audio synchronization.


EXPERIMENTAL RIGGING WORKFLOWS

Experimental tools have been introduced to make rigging more powerful directly within the editor.
You can now create morph targets with the new Skeletal Mesh Editor and add realistic physical motion to character rigs using Control Rig Physics, resulting in more dynamic and natural animations.


METAHUMANS FULLY IN-ENGINE

With UE 5.6, MetaHumans can be created, customized, and managed entirely within the engine.
This eliminates the need for external tools, greatly simplifying the character development process.
Additionally, with MetaHuman Animator, it is now possible to capture actors’ performances in real time using most webcams and many smartphones, or directly from an audio track.
This makes creating realistic facial animations faster and more accessible than ever.


SIMPLIFIED UX/UI EXPERIENCE

The editor has been updated to offer a more streamlined user experience, with faster workflows, improved content organization, and quicker access to commonly used tools and settings.
The new Content Browser makes it easier to browse and manage assets, with smoother thumbnail resizing and optimized support for both horizontal and vertical layouts.
The Viewport Toolbar has also been redesigned, now featuring sectioned menus and quick access controls for faster interaction with essential tools.


IMPROVED DEVELOPER ITERATION

New tools have been introduced to accelerate content development and deployment across multiple platforms, making the iteration cycle faster and more efficient.
Key additions include Zen Streaming (now in Beta), which allows testing content without full builds or manual installations; Incremental Cook (Experimental), which reduces cooking times by processing only modified assets; and the Project Launcher (Beta), featuring a redesigned interface that improves the management of device launch profiles.


FASTER WORLDBUILDING WITH PROCEDURAL TOOLS

Unreal Engine 5.6 introduces major improvements to Procedural Content Generation (PCG) tools, making the creation of complex environments faster and more efficient.
The PCG framework now supports multithreaded execution and GPU acceleration, significantly enhancing overall performance.


ENHANCED CINEMATIC & PERFORMANCE CAPTURE WORKFLOWS

Unreal Engine 5.6 streamlines cinematic production with the new Mocap Manager, allowing you to manage performance capture directly within the editor.
The Cinematic Assembly Toolset simplifies workflows through templates and compatibility with tools like Take Recorder.
Additionally, the Quick Render feature (Beta) enables one-click rendering of a scene directly from the viewport.
