The Witcher 3 returns with a new expansion: Songs of the Past announced
CD PROJEKT RED has officially announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past, a new expansion that will take players on another adventure in the shoes of Geralt of Rivia. The content will be released in 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The new expansion is being developed in collaboration with Fool’s Theory, a studio that also includes developers who worked on the original The Witcher 3. Although story details are still being kept secret, the title will offer a completely new narrative featuring the iconic Witcher, even if no gameplay footage has been shown yet, nor have details about new characters, locations, or monsters been revealed.
The announcement comes as a surprise to the community, considering that The Witcher 3 was released in 2015 and has previously received the acclaimed expansions Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. With over 60 million copies sold and hundreds of international awards won over the years, the title is still widely regarded as one of the greatest RPGs ever made.
Why it matters
Songs of the Past is not just a new expansion, but also a return to the roots for many fans of the series. Fool’s Theory’s involvement raises expectations, suggesting an adventure capable of preserving the spirit that made the game so iconic.
In addition, the expansion will allow CD PROJEKT RED to keep one of its most iconic titles alive while the studio continues development on The Witcher 4, which is currently in full production.
What to expect in the coming months
At the moment, the team has not revealed further details, but new information will be shared by the end of summer 2026. In parallel, CD PROJEKT RED will also update the PC system requirements to better support future content for the game.
